In 1989, over two decades after the start of Velvet Underground, Lou Reed released his 15th solo album, the aptly titledĀ New York. Reed was, of course, born and raised in New York, and in some capacity helped changed the city through his music and art. The record, which was produced by Reed and Fred Maher, was a success, both critically and commercially: it was extremely well-reviewed, the single "Dirty Blvd." went to #1 on the Modern Rock chart, the albumĀ charted at #40 in the US and #14 in the UK, and it was eventually certified Gold in the US and in several other countries. Reed also notably reunited with Velvet Underground drummer Moe Tucker for two tracks on the album. The album's popularity helped get the old band back together, as Velvet Underground reunited the following year.
